Because they compared the sky to the ocean, even the earliest balloonists spoke of “balloon sailing”. Just as ships sailed on the sea, the term was used to describe a balloon ascent. According to this perception, a balloon sailed across the sky in the same way as a boat sails on the sea.

A balloon is filled with a gaseous mixture which is lighter than the surrounding air. This produces lift. In Germany, the maximum balloon capacity may not exceed 12,000 m³. The balloon’s speed depends on the local wind speed. During launch and at landing, speeds are far below 20 kph, while in flight, speeds average up to 40 kph. Sightseeing flights normally take place at altitudes between 300 and 3,000 meters.

Balloon ascents always depend on prevailing weather conditions – ballooning is not possible if winds are gusty, or if it is raining or snowing. Prior to ascending, please determine whether a flight is even possible.
